Subspecies ID
One of the greatest difficulties in the arena of the Eclectus parrot is the
issue of identifying the different subspecies. The females have some very
tell-tale signs that typically give them away. The males however, do
not! Here are some pictures of the different subspecies to try and help
you get an idea of the differences. Please understand that you can look at
these birds here, but when you go to actually LOOK at a bird somewhere be
absolutely clueless as to the subspecies. It really is a knack!
In an effort to give you the best pictures possible the
downloading times for this page are long. Sorry about the delay but the
picture quality is worth it.

I only have the three males to compare but
there are differences in each. From what I hear tail colors and the
amount of yellow in the tail of each bird varies significantly even in
each subspecies. |
Adult Solomon Island & Red
Sided Size & Color Comparison

Here are two adult males - (RS on left SI on right)
Here are the things that I want you to notice:
1. Color differences. These pictures aren't the greatest but
they do a great job of showing beak color differences, and body color
differences.
2. Size differences. The RS male is significantly larger than
the SI male. Male RS weight - 456 gms; Male SI weight - 361 gms.
3. Head shape differences. The SI male here is moulting
slightly on the back of his head...but notice the difference of head
shapes in these two males.
